On 13 June 2016, Oxford University’s Somerville College gave a dinner to celebrate its award to Wafic Said of a Foundation Fellowship. A Foundation Fellowship is the highest honour that Somerville College can bestow and is given to those whose philanthropic support has had a transformational effect on the College. The Fellowship was awarded to Mr Said for his significant support of the Margaret Thatcher Scholarship Trust.
One of the great leaders of the 20th century, Margaret Thatcher overcame huge barriers to become Britain’s first woman Prime Minister and the longest serving British Prime Minister of the century. She believed that it was her time as a student at Somerville which unlocked her extraordinary potential. In her memory, Somerville established the Margaret Thatcher Scholarship Trust to set future generations of students on their way by giving them access both to an Oxford education and to the special environment of Somerville.
